Dan Schmitz, Lead Pastor
I’ve worked with refugees and immigrants in Oakland for nearly 25 years. I was one of the first to join New Hope and am currently its lead pastor. Besides pastoring the church, I am also involved in community organizing, community gardening and programs for families and youth in the neighborhood. I am married to Jan and have a creative, energetic son named Peter.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, I came to Oakland out of a desire to respond to God’s love for the poor. After serving as Director of Youth Programs for Harbor House Ministries, I spent a month at a monastery and have since been trying to integrate a life of contemplation and action. I received my Master of Arts in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union and a Master of Divinity from the American Baptist Seminary of the West. I am happily married to Shauna Olson Hong and consider being a father to my children (Alana, Kai, and Corrie) as one of my primary vocations.

After growing up in San Diego, I went to college at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Two months after graduating, I moved across the country to Baltimore, Maryland to work with families in an urban, African American church, and in affordable housing research. I’m thankful for this opportunity to work with children at New Hope and our neighborhood–they are such gifts and teachers of God’s grace and joy. I am happily married and quickly adjusting to the birth of our first son.
