New Hope is partnering with the East Bay Asian Youth Center and the Oakland Police Department to send Dear John letters.
What is a Dear John letter?
When you witness a driver soliciting someone for sex in Oakland, make a note of the car’s license plate and description. If you report that information to OPD, they will send a letter to the registered owner of the vehicle. The letter doesn’t accuse the recipient of a crime; it lets them know that buying sex is not acceptable and that they are being watched. Many cities have used this program to decrease the demand for commercial sex in hotspot areas. This article describes the program in more detail.
What do I need to report?
For OPD to send a letter, they need at least the date, time, and location of the suspicious activity, along with the license plate number of the car involved. A description of the car and driver and a description of the suspicious activity helps, too. You do not need to leave any personal information in your report.
How else can I report?
